Racial Justice & Civil Rights
WOI’s commitment to racial justice and civil rights runs deep. Since the 1800s, Black and Native women have been providing leadership in WOI’s movement and, because of the leadership of women of color, in 1946.
WOI’s strategic framework is the culmination of consultation and exploration with WOIs across the country and reflects our legacy as a pioneering organization that squarely confronts social justice issues to make lasting, meaningful change. The focus areas below guide our organization’s collective efforts at the national and local levels, with each WOI association tailoring its approach to meet their community’s needs.
We strongly believe that economic empowerment is key to achieving gender equality. As part of our advocacy, we push for policies that create economic opportunities for women and support their participation in the workforce. This includes advocating for affordable childcare, equal pay for equal work, and financial literacy programs that equip women to take control of their financial future. Our focus is on ensuring that women can access the resources and opportunities needed to become financially independent and contribute meaningfully to the economy.
True empowerment isn’t just about external success — it must include inner strength. We offer counseling, emotional support groups, and wellness programs that focus on mental health, self worth, resilience, and healing. Women of India advocates a holistic approach: mind, body, and spirit.
No woman should stand alone. We build supportive communities and peer networks where women mentor one another, share resources, and build collective strength. Our events, forums, and group initiatives foster connections, collaboration, and solidarity.
We believe that true change will only occur when women are equally represented in all areas of decision-making, particularly in politics. Our advocacy extends to pushing for greater political participation and leadership roles for women. We support policies that encourage women to take on leadership positions and influence public policy. Additionally, we work to raise awareness about the importance of women’s representation in governance, from local bodies to national politics.
WOI focuses our mission-driven work on these areas to improve the lives of girls and women:
